Effect of Eucommia ulmoides on Systolic Blood Pressure in the Spontaneous Hypertensive Rat

Experiments were conducted to establish the safety and efficacy of Eucommia ulmoides (Du-Zhong) extract in the treatment of hypertension. Pilot experiments using rats demonstrated that E. ulmoides extract was safe to the saturation limits of the compound. The maximum tolerated dose (MTD) was 1200 mg/kg when administered by gastric gavage at a concentration of 1200 mg/ml. Also, rats given 200 mg/kg, 600 mg/kg or 1200 mg/kg doses of E. ulmoides extract daily for 28 days demonstrated no evidence of acute toxicity as determined by clinical appearance, histopathology and serum chemistry evaluation. Lastly, spontaneous hypertensive rats (SHRs) were administered E. ulmoides extract daily for 22 days. Systolic blood pressure (BP) was measured on treatment days 1, 8, 15 and 22 at 0, 1, 2 and 3 hours post-treatment. Beginning on day 8, E. ulmoides extract administered at the mid or high dosages lowered BP in male, but not female, rats. BP declined at a rate of approximately 10 mmHg per hour. The mid dosage of 600 mg/kg was found to be the minimum effective dose. In conclusion, E. ulmoides extract was non-toxic and effective in reducing systolic BP in the SHR.

Diethylamine and formic acid-based ionic liquid in selective purification process of oil distillates of various viscosities

This paper presents the results of selective purification of oil distillates with a viscosity of 7.5 mm2/s and 18 mm2/s at 100C, as well as a mixture of these oil distillates obtained by compounding at various ratios using an ionic liquid based on diethylamine and formic acid as an extractant acid. The conditions for the ionic liquid dearomatization of the indicated oil distillates were determined by studying the influence of various factors on the selective purification process. Many parameters are set for the objects of research. The values of physicochemical parameters determined under various conditions are presented in the tables.

Heuristic Initialization for Active Contour Models in CT/MRI Image Processing

It is an important segmentation approach of CT/MRI images to automatically extract contours in every slice using active contour models. The key point of the segmentation approach is to automatically construct initial contours for active contour models because any active contour model is sensitive to its initial contour. This paper presents an algorithm to construct such initial contours using a heuristic method. Assume that the contour in previous slice (previous contour) is accurate. The contour in the current slice (current contour) is constructed according to the previous contour using the way: Recognition and link of edge points of tissues according to the previous contour. The contour linking edge points is used as the initial contour of the distance regularized level set evolution (DRLSE) method and then an accurate contour can be extracted in the current slice.

Study on optimization of extraction conditions of total alkaloids from Zizyphi spinosi semen

To obtain the best appropriate method and optimum extraction conditions of total alkaloids from zizyphi spinosi semen (ZSS), the conditions of reflux extraction were optimized by single factor experiment and orthogonal design respectively. the experiment results were as follows: 20% acetic acid resolved in ethanol as extracting solvent (EtOH:HAc=80:20 (v/v)), ratio of liquid to solid=20:1(ml:g), 4.0 h, 70 °C, and these conditions were optimum conditions after validation of experiment. The total alkaloids of ZSS extracted by this method could provide a powerful guarantee for studying ingredients and activities of alkaloids in ZSS.

Antibacterial effects of Prosopis juliflora occurring in Iran

Many plants of genus Prosopis (Leguminosae) are known to be of medicinal value because of increasing bacterial resistance against antibiotics and reported side effects of drugs ,researchers are trying to find new drugs and its natural source. In this study antibacterial activity of Prosopis juliflora was tested in -vitro against six gram positive and negative bacteria by paper disk diffusion and well methods.

In this purpose the methanolic extract at different concentrations (0.05, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4 mg ml −1) against Staphylococus aureus, Micrococcus loteus, Bacillus cereus, Shigella sonee, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli were tested.

Comparison were made with Amoxicillin and Methicin. Results showed that Pseudomonas aureginosa had the maximum resistant and Micrococcus luteus had the less resistant against this extract.

Further work needs to be done in this extract including fractionation to isolate active constituents and subsequent pharmacological evaluation.
