This paper deals with numerical study of flow field in a channel bend in presence of a lateral intake using three-dimensional numerical model SSIIM2. The effects of bend on the structure of the flow around the intake are investigated and compared with the experimental data. The tests are carried out in a U-shaped channel bend with a lateral intake. The intake is located at the outer bank of an 180^∘ bend at position 115^∘ with 45^∘ diversion angle and the experimental data can be used to calibrate and validate numerical models. The results show that both the center-region and outer-bank cross-stream circulations are observed in the experiments while only the former is captured by the numerical model due to the limitations of the turbulence model. In the curved channel after the intake, both experimental and numerical results show another type of bi-cellular circulations in which clockwise center-region circulations and counterclockwise circulations near the inner bank and the free surface (inner-bank circulations) are captured. The study shows that the numerical model very satisfactorily predicts streamlines, velocity field and flow pattern in the channel and in vicinity of the intake. Investigation of flow pattern around lateral intake in channel bends shows that contrary to the case of flow diversion in straight channels, the width of the dividing stream surface near water surface level is greater than that of near bed level. Finally, the effects of position and diversion angle of the lateral intake, discharge ratio and upstream Froude number on the flow pattern are investigated.

Natural rivers are one of the main sources of water and energy for humans. The design and management of exploitation of natural rivers systems will require a complete understanding of flow and sediment transport mechanics. Meanders are one of the most common types of rivers in nature, which have a very complex flow. The three-dimensional (3D) and complex characteristics of flow in meanderings bring up the necessity of investigating the flow pattern in this channel with 3D numerical models. This study aimed to investigate the flow pattern and predict the erosion and sedimentation site in the meandering. Also, the effect of the Froude number (Fr), the ratio of width-to-depth ($B$/$h)$ and meander angle parameters on the flow field are investigated. In this study, the turbulent flow pattern in a sine-generated channel and the angle of 50^∘ with a rectangular section with width = 40 cm and the rigid bed is studied using the 3D mathematical model SSIIM1.1. The primary and secondary flow patterns were studied using the turbulence models of $k$-$\epsilon$ and SST $k$-$\omega$. Comparison of numerical models and experimental results showed that the flow pattern is predicted well by both turbulence models of turbulence. But in some cases, the SST $k$-$\omega$ model has provided closer results to the experimental results. The results show that the shear stress pattern depends on the changes in the Fr. But, the secondary flow pattern does not change much by changing the Fr. Also, changes in the $B$/$h$ ratio affect the secondary flow pattern and shear stress pattern, so that for $B$/$h<8$, a small rotary cell is made in addition to the main rotary cell near the outer coast. The results also show that the flow pattern and shear stress depend on the channel angle.

A steady Newtonian fluid flow through annular region in curved pipes is studied in this paper. The flow takes place due to an axial pressure gradient and it is three-dimensional in nature. The equations governing the flow are highly coupled and nonlinear. The solutions are obtained, analytically, using a regular perturbation method. The effects of curvature ratio $(\delta )$, Reynolds number (Re) and the radius ratio $(l)$ on the axial velocity and stream function are presented graphically. It is observed that, along with curvature ratio and Reynolds number, radius ratio highly affects the fluid flow in annular curved pipes.

Computational blood flow studies are providing an increasingly important complement to clinical experiments in 21st century biomedical engineering. Motivated by probing deeper into this topic, a theoretical and numerical study is presented of the flow induced by an impulsive acceleration to steady state hemodynamics in a curved tube which is investigated as a boundary layer developing with time from the curved entrance to a straight tube (blood vessel). The transient processes are simulated with a finite volume method solution of the Navier–Stokes equations. The rapid growth of the boundary layer with the core flow is captured in the curved entrance, along the tube to an axisymmetric flow in the downstream. Secondary flow patterns, centrifugal pressures and total head contours are correlated with longitudinal velocity distributions across various sections. It is observed that the entrance zone is controlled by uniform inlet velocity and centrifugal forces. The high pressure drop in the onset flow is associated with strong acceleration which is comparable to generating systolic pressures. The simulations further indicate that a sustained increment in volumetric flow rate is necessary to maintain the pressure wave in the aorta. Furthermore, the velocity distributions are shown to approach Hagen–Poiseuille flow in the downstream zone. The complex hemodynamic characteristics are visualized effectively with computational simulations and the study demonstrates the excellent ability of this approach in elaborating critical flow details in aortic hemodynamics.

In this experimental investigation, the heat transfer coefficients of a shell and helically coiled tube heat exchanger using Al₂O₃/water nanofluid under laminar flow condition were studied. The Al₂O₃ nanoparticles were characterized by X-Ray diffraction (XRD). The Al₂O₃/water nanofluid at 0.1%, 0.4% and 0.8% particle volume concentration were prepared by using two step method. The prepared nanofluid was characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM). It is observed that the overall heat transfer coefficient, inner heat transfer coefficient and experimental inner Nusselt number increase while increasing particle volume concentration and increasing inner Dean number. The enhancement of overall heat transfer coefficient was found to be 7%, 16.9% and 24.2% at 0.1%, 0.4% and 0.8% Al₂O₃/water nanofluid respectively when compared with water. The enhancement of tube side experimental Nusselt number was found to be 17%, 22.9% and 28% at 0.1%, 0.4% and 0.8% particle volume concentration of Al₂O₃/water nanofluid respectively when compared with water at fixed Dean number. The tests were conducted in the range of 1600 < De < 2700, and 5200 < Re < 8600 under laminar flow condition and counter flow configuration. These enhancements are due to higher thermal conductivity of nanofluid while increasing particle volume concentration and Brownian motion of nanoparticles. It is studied that there is no negative impact on formation of secondary flow and mixing of fluid when nanofluid passes through the helically coiled tube.

Field observations of the currents at a bending channel in the Abashiri River in Hokkaido, Japan have revealed an unexpected secondary circulation during flood tide with near-bed and near-surface currents toward the outer and inner banks of the bend, respectively. The direction of these cross-stream currents was reversed at the end of flood tide. The occurrence and shutdown of these observed unexpected secondary circulation were further investigated through the shape of the along-channel velocity profile by using a theoretical solution based on the steady-state momentum equation and the Stokes’s second problem for oscillating flow. Also, an advanced numerical model was used to quantify the unexpected secondary flow. It was shown from the theoretical analysis that vertical advection plays a great role in the momentum balance affecting the direction of secondary flows. The typical secondary flow was found to occur throughout ebb tide with a pronounced near-surface maximum velocity profile. Whereas, during flood tide, the longitudinal velocity profile was characterized by a near-bed and mid-depth maximum, resulting an upwelling flow near the outer bank. These findings were reconfirmed by numerical simulations that were conducted for the entire estuary.

Among all the joints in the human body, the elbow joint is the one which most easily suffers from stiffness. Thus, a progressive stretching static adjustable elbow splint is necessary for a post-traumatic or post-operative situation in treating of elbow problems. We developed a new type of static adjustable elbow splint, which can provide flexion and extension in a wide range of motion. The splint also has a self-adjustable spiral rod. Patients can adjust the motion arc according to his tolerance, which may reduce the iatrogenic injury caused by forceful manipulation. The splint has two rotation hinges to provide self-adjustment of rotation center. We can apply this new type of splint for post-operative rehabilitation of elbow surgery, such as fracture-dislocation fixation, contracture release, arthroplasty and non-operative treatment of elbow injury.

Blood secondary flows and vessel wall shear stress distributions in a human aortic arch have been predicted numerically for a Reynolds number of 4700 at entrance. The simulation geometry was derived from a three-dimensional reconstruction of a series of two-dimensional slices obtained in vivo. Numerical results demonstrate wall stresses were highly dynamic, but were generally high along the outer wall in the vicinity of the branches and low along the inner wall, particularly in the descending thoracic aorta. The maximum wall stress distribution is presented on the aortic arch in the systole. Extensive secondary flow motion was observed in the aorta, and the structure of these secondary flows was influenced considerably by the presence of the branches. Within the aorta, it is observed that clockwise secondary flow recirculation, also seen in the MRA scan data, appears in the downstream of aortic arch in the late systole and turn out to be a pair of counter-clockwise vortex in the downstream of the arch in the early diastole.
