Transdisciplinary practices in artificial intelligence (AI) requires good methodological techniques to bring researchers together from diverse disciplines. Different fields and traditions each may have an impact on the greater AI ecosystem, however, to properly gauge this impact, and include diverse voices, research methodologies must evolve to adopt new methods and techniques. To understand the shifting demands for new skills, we conducted a transdisciplinary workshop, bringing together stakeholders from industry, government and academia, by engaging with scenarios in healthcare and emergency response, using future visioning to imagine new skill requirements across job roles. We found that future visioning was a useful methodology to help frame discussions in a manner conducive to eliciting qualitative evidence of different policy approaches. Beyond individual skills, we propose the Human-AI Synergy Matrix as a collaborative competency framework, which integrates technical, professional, and strategic skills with levels of engagement such as awareness, communication, synergy, governance, and transformation. The matrix aims to facilitate evaluation and understanding of skills and critical issues in human-AI collaboration within AI ecosystems, emphasizing the need to address broader challenges in an interconnected manner.

Transdisciplinary (TD) working is claimed to be critical to meet future societal needs, with engineers being at the core to provide solutions to these challenges. However, there is little available that enables one to assess whether they or their team have the competencies required. Within this paper, we propose a self-assessment framework to ascertain whether design engineers have the competencies which enable TD working. We describe how the competencies were identified using a systematic literature review (SLR), we then describe how we utilized coded decision trees to classify which disciplinary level a particular competency can enable. In total, 76 competencies were classified; the results of the analysis show 20 of these displaying TD attributes as defined by Jantsch. The novelty of the approach is as follows: (1) In this paper, we propose a novel way to map the identified competencies against the levels of Jantsch’s hierarchical framework. (2) The proposed framework enables self-assessment of individual or team competencies to assess whether they have the competencies which enable TD working. (3) It enables a move towards incorporating TD practices in engineering projects.

Considering the impact on human beings and human activities of architectural decisions in the design of space for human habitation, this chapter discusses the increasingly evident and necessary confluence in contemporary times of many disciplines and human-oriented sciences, with architecture being the meeting ground to know emergent phenomena of human habitation. As both a general rubric and a specific phenomenon, architectural emergence is the chosen focus of discussion and other phenomena are related to it. Attention is given to the phenomena of architectural induction, emergence, and convergence as having strategic and explanatory value in understanding tensions between two competing mentalities, the global domineering nature-for-humans attitude, in opposition to the lesser practiced humans-for-nature attitude.

This book series, intended to describe the role of Information Science in the Quest for Transdisciplinarity, makes two major metatheoretical assumptions:

• Transdisciplinarity is a not fully established domain of knowledge whose importance justifies making a quest to augment it.
• Given the convergence in progress between the Science and Philosophy of Information, both can make a contribution to this quest.

For this chapter, we draw on new research by Wu establishing the contours of a potential Unified Science-Philosophy of Information (USPI) and by Brenner on information and the foundations of Transdisciplinarity. Wu states that the underlying interaction of Information Science and Information Philosophy now appears as a convergence toward a potential USPI. We follow the Nicolescu concept of Transdisciplinarity as what lies in, between and beyond disciplines, but feel it requires an amplified, informational ontology which an eventual USPI could provide. We see the combination of these two lines of thought as a trend which could give a new unity and comprehensive form to knowledge. This is exactly the objective stated for Transdisciplinarity itself by Nicolescu in his 1996 Manifesto. In the framework of a Unified Science-Philosophy of Information, which would include Transdisciplinarity, philosophy, science and technology may develop in an interactive, more humanistic manner.
