The sterile insect technique (SIT) is a biological control technique that can be used either to eliminate or decay a wild mosquito population under a given threshold to reduce the nuisance or the epidemiological risk. In this work, we propose a model using a differential system that takes into account the variations of rainfall and temperature over time and study their impacts on sterile males’ releases strategies. Our model is as simple as possible to avoid complexity while being able to capture the temporal variations of an Aedes albopictus mosquito population in a domain treated by SIT, located in Réunion island. The main objective is to determine what period of the year is the most suitable to start a SIT control to minimize the duration of massive releases and the number of sterile males to release, either to reduce the mosquito nuisance, or to reduce the epidemiological risk. Since sterilization is not $100\%$ efficient, we also study the impact of different levels of residual fertility within the released sterile males population. Our study shows that rainfall plays a major role in the dynamics of the mosquito and the SIT control, that the best period to start a massive SIT treatment lasts from July to December, that residual fertility has to be as small as possible, at least for nuisance reduction. Indeed, when the main objective is to reduce the epidemiological risk, we show that residual fertility is not necessarily an issue. Increasing the size of the releases is not always interesting. We also highlight the importance of combining SIT with mechanical control, i.e., the removal of breeding sites, in particular when the initial mosquito population is large. Last but not least our study shows the usefulness of the modeling approach to derive various simulations to anticipate issues and demand in terms of sterile insects’ production.

A key technology of the next generation robots is the ability to move with high speed, high precision and communication network control. We propose a vector control system by applying optical-EtherCAT to PMSM with two-axes. We describe configurations of hardware and software to vector control of PMSM with two-axis using an optical-EtherCAT and explain two phase coordinate transformations of the d-q-axis that is the basis of vector control with an optical EtherCAT. We also report results of vector current control, vector current and speed, and vector current and position control of PMSM with two-axes for proposed optical EtherCAT. We confirm that we achieved satisfactory control results due to vector control implemented with an optical EtherCAT.

In environmental and public health management, a number of mosquito species are considered pests and vectors of diseases. They are responsible for transmitting pathogens such as plasmodium and flaviviruses, causing the endemic circulation of those diseases in some countries. Notably, many of these mosquito vectors are exotic species which have undergone geographic expansion over the past centuries, leading to the dissemination of diseases outside of their native range. The spread and establishment of exotic mosquitoes and their associated mosquito-borne diseases (MBDs) are critical due to their public health implications and socio-economic costs. These have been facilitated by trade and globalisation, urbanisation, and climate change. Many countries and regions are vigilant about invasive mosquitoes and include them on the watchlist of their pest surveillance and control programmes. While conventional methods of species identification under microscopes are dominant approaches in mosquito surveillance, recent molecular techniques have been under active development and application in the field. This chapter summarises the state-of-the-art molecular methods, aiming to explain their strengths and limitations in providing timely and informative detection of mosquito invasion events and associated pathogens, which can guide subsequent control measures to hopefully eliminate exotic populations before they become established in new places.

This work presents a vector control (VC) of an emerging brushless doubly-fed reluctance (BDFRG) technology for large wind turbine applications. The BDFRG has been receiving increasing attention due to its low operation and maintenance costs afforded by the use of partially-rated power electronics, and the high reliability of brushless assembly, while offering performance competitive to its traditional slip-ring counterpart, the doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG). A robust VC strategy has been developed for a custom-designed BDFRG fed from a conventional ‘back-to-back’ IGBT converter. Preliminary studies have evaluated the algorithm under the power factor control (PFC) conditions which allow the enhanced efficiency of the generator-converter set and the entire wind energy conversion systems (WECS).

Speed estimation of speed sensorless has become major hotspot of modern high performance AC speed regulation; the vector control method is analyzed in deep. Based on voltage model as the basis, the introduction of reference value compensation strategy ensures that the motor can measure rotor speed accurately at low speed. In hardware, the motor control system composed of double DSP control board and two level inverters is designed. In Double DSP control board composed of the TMS320LF2407A and TMS320VC33, high floating point computing power of VC33 solve the problems of programming and calculation precision, the use of hardware features 2407 of its own and combined power system simulation to realize fast communication, sampling function. Finally, the simulation data are analyzed in a case, draw the error parameter curve, and verify the correctness of the velocity measurement method of the speed sensorless vector control.

The neutral point clamped (NPC) pulse width modulation (PWM) inverter has been put into practical use for large capacity AC motor drives because of its less distorted output, lower costs and better control performance. This paper suggests a way to improve the performance of permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) by using the three-level NPC inverter. Firstly, the three-level NPC inverter space voltage vector pulse width modulation (SVPWM) technique is analyzed in detail. Then, the NPC inverter is applied in PMSM vector control. Finally, a simulation experiment of the proposed control algorithm is carried out. The simulation results show that the proposed method can effectively suppress the torque ripple and improve driving performance for the PMSM drive.
