There are many ways that a person can encounter chaos, such as through a time series from a lab experiment, a basin of attraction with fractal boundaries, a map with a crossing of stable and unstable manifolds, a fractal attractor, or in a system for which uncertainty doubles after some time period. These encounters appear so diverse, but the chaos is the same in all of the underlying systems; it is just observed in different ways. We describe these different types of chaos. We then give two conjectures about the types of dynamical behavior that is observable if one randomly picks out a dynamical system without searching for a specific property. In particular, we conjecture that from picking a system at random, one observes (1) only three types of basic invariant sets: periodic orbits, quasiperiodic orbits, and chaotic sets; and (2) that all the definitions of chaos are in agreement.

We study chaotic behavior of solutions to the bilinear system of Lorenz type developed by Celikovsky and Vanecek [1994] through an application of competitive modes. This bilinear system of Lorenz type is one possible canonical form holding the Lorenz equation as a special case. Using a competitive modes analysis, which is a completely analytical method allowing one to identify parameter regimes for which chaos may occur, we are able to demonstrate a number of parameter regimes which admit a variety of distinct chaotic behaviors. Indeed, we are able to draw some interesting conclusions which relate the behavior of the mode frequencies arising from writing the state variables for the Celikovsky–Vanecek model as coupled oscillators, and the types of emergent chaotic behaviors observed. The competitive modes analysis is particularly useful if all but one of the model parameters are fixed, and the remaining free parameter is used to modify the chaos observed, in a manner analogous to a bifurcation parameter. Through a thorough application of the method, we are able to identify several parameter regimes which give new dynamics (such as specific forms of chaos) which were not observed or studied previously in the Celikovsky–Vanecek model. Therefore, the results demonstrate the advantage of the competitive modes approach for detecting new parameter regimes leading to chaos in third-order dynamical systems.

We study a nonanalytic perturbation of the complex quadratic family z ↦ z² + c in the form of a two-dimensional noninvertible map that has been introduced by Bamón et al. [2006]. The map acts on the plane by opening up the critical point to a disk and wrapping the plane twice around it; points inside the disk have no preimages. The bounding critical circle and its images, together with the critical point and its preimages, form the so-called critical set. For parameters away from the complex quadratic family we define a generalized notion of the Julia set as the basin boundary of infinity. We are interested in how the Julia set changes when saddle points along with their stable and unstable sets appear as the perturbation is switched on. Advanced numerical techniques enable us to study the interactions of the Julia set with the critical set and the (un)stable sets of saddle points. We find the appearance and disappearance of chaotic attractors and dramatic changes in the topology of the Julia set; these bifurcations lead to three complicated types of Julia sets that are given by the closure of stable sets of saddle points of the map, namely, a Cantor bouquet and what we call a Cantor tangle and a Cantor cheese. We are able to illustrate how bifurcations of the nonanalytic map connect to those of the complex quadratic family by computing two-parameter bifurcation diagrams that reveal a self-similar bifurcation structure near the period-doubling route to chaos in the complex quadratic family.

For some 3D autonomous quadratic dynamical systems an explicit autonomous exponential-algebraic 1D map, generating chaos in mentioned systems, is designed. Examples of the systems, where chaos is generated by such discrete maps, are given. New results about an existence of chaotic dynamics in the quadratic 3D systems are also derived. Besides, for the Lanford system (it is 3D autonomous quadratic dynamical system) the value of some parameter at which the system shows increased chaotic behavior is indicated. This assertion is based on the construction for the Lanford system of 2D exponential-algebraic discrete map which possesses chaotic properties.

In this paper, the output voltage of a buck power converter is controlled by means of a quasi-sliding scheme. The Fixed Point Inducting Control (FPIC) technique is used for the control design, based on the Zero Average Dynamics (ZAD) strategy, including load estimation by means of the Least Mean Squares (LMS) method. The control scheme is tested in a Rapid Control Prototyping (RCP) system based on Digital Signal Processing (DSP) for dSPACE platform. The closed loop system shows adequate performance. The experimental and simulation results match. The main contribution of this paper is to introduce the load estimator by means of LMS, to make ZAD and FPIC control feasible in load variation conditions. In addition, comparison results for controlled buck converter with SMC, PID and ZAD–FPIC control techniques are shown.

Chaos-based data encryption is one of the most reliable methods used in secure communications. This implies a good control of a chaotic system and a good synchronization between the involved systems. Here, experimental results are shown on the control and synchronization of Chua's circuits. The control of the chaotic circuit was achieved by using the switching method. The influence of the control signal characteristics (amplitude, frequency and shape) on the system's states was also investigated. The synchronization of two similar chaotic circuits was studied, emphasizing the importance of the chaotic state characteristics of the Master system in respect to those of Slave system. It was shown that the synchronization does not depend on the chaotic state type, neither on the dimension (x, y or z) used for synchronization.

Dynamical systems, whether continuous or discrete, are used by physicists in order to study nonlinear phenomena. In the case of discrete dynamical systems, one of the most used is the quadratic map depending on a parameter. However, some phenomena can depend alternatively on two values of the same parameter. We use the quadratic map when the parameter alternates between two values during the iteration process. In this case, the orbit of the alternate system is the sum of the orbits of two quartic maps. The bifurcation diagrams of these maps present breaking points at which there is an abrupt change in their evolution.

In this paper, the dynamics of the paradigmatic hyperchaotic oscillator with gyrators introduced by Tamasevicius and co-workers (referred to as the TCMNL oscillator hereafter) is considered. This well known hyperchaotic oscillator with active RC realization of inductors is suitable for integrated circuit implementation. Unlike previous literature based on piecewise-linear approximation methods, I derive a new (smooth) mathematical model based on the Shockley diode equation to explore the dynamics of the oscillator. Various tools for detecting chaos including bifurcation diagrams, Lyapunov exponents, frequency spectra, phase portraits and Poincaré sections are exploited to establish the connection between the system parameters and various complex dynamic regimes (e.g. hyperchaos, period-3 doubling bifurcation, coexistence of attractors, transient chaos) of the hyperchaotic oscillator. One of the most interesting and striking features of this oscillator discovered/revealed in this work is the coexistence of a hyperchaotic attractor with a chaotic one over a broad range of system parameters. This phenomenon was not reported previously and therefore represents a meaningful contribution to the understanding of the behavior of nonlinear dynamical systems in general. A close agreement is observed between theoretical and experimental analyses.

The problem of global synchronization control for a class of new Chua's system is studied in this paper. Several linear controllers are proposed to realize the global exponential synchronization of two Chua's systems. Decoupling feedback control method is used to make Chua's system global exponential synchronized. Global exponential synchronization with respect to (w.r.t) partial state variables is studied when one of the error variables is zero. Finally, an adaptive synchronization controller is designed to make the response and the driven systems synchronized. Moreover, the estimate errors of the uncertain parameters converge to zero since the persistent excitation condition holds. Additionally, numerical simulations show the effectiveness of the proposed controllers.

We investigate the possible role of intermittent chaotic dynamics called chaotic itinerancy, in interaction with nonsupervised learnings that reinforce and weaken the neural connection depending on the dynamics itself. We first performed hierarchical stability analysis of the Chaotic Neural Network model (CNN) according to the structure of invariant subspaces. Irregular transition between two attractor ruins with positive maximum Lyapunov exponent was triggered by the blowout bifurcation of the attractor spaces, and was associated with riddled basins structure. We secondly modeled two autonomous learnings, Hebbian learning and spike-timing-dependent plasticity (STDP) rule, and simulated the effect on the chaotic itinerancy state of CNN. Hebbian learning increased the residence time on attractor ruins, and produced novel attractors in the minimum higher-dimensional subspace. It also augmented the neuronal synchrony and established the uniform modularity in chaotic itinerancy. STDP rule reduced the residence time on attractor ruins, and brought a wide range of periodicity in emerged attractors, possibly including strange attractors. Both learning rules selectively destroyed and preserved the specific invariant subspaces, depending on the neuron synchrony of the subspace where the orbits are situated. Computational rationale of the autonomous learning is discussed in connectionist perspective.

In this paper, we consider a class of piecewise smooth Liénard systems. We classify the unperturbed system into three types and study the bifurcation of limit cycles under perturbations. By studying the expansions of the first order Melnikov function, we give some new results on the number of limit cycles in homoclinic bifurcations.

Discovering unknown features of no-equilibrium systems with hidden strange attractors is an attractive research topic. This paper presents a novel no-equilibrium chaotic system that is constructed by using a state feedback controller. Interestingly, the new system can exhibit multiwing butterfly attractors. Moreover, a new chaotic system with an infinite number of equilibrium points, which can generate multiscroll attractors, is also proposed by applying the introduced methodology.

A nonlinear car-following model considering memory effect of human drivers is studied by means of theoretical analysis and numerical simulation. We model the memory effect of the response of drivers to the traffic situation for a car-following model by introducing a system variable related to velocity. The memory effect of the drivers is a kind of state-dependent delay. The stability of the car-following model with two kinds of time delay is studied. The hysteresis loop of traffic flow from different initial states is compared. The effect of the maximum time delay on the stability is discussed.

In this paper, we investigate the codimension-two double Hopf bifurcation in delay-coupled van der Pol–Duffing oscillators. By using normal form theory of delay differential equations, the normal form associated with the codimension-two double Hopf bifurcation is calculated. Choosing appropriate values of the coupling strength and the delay can result in nonresonance and weak resonance double Hopf bifurcations. The dynamical classification near these bifurcation points can be explicitly determined by the corresponding normal form. Periodic, quasi-periodic solutions and torus are found near the bifurcation point. The numerical simulations are employed to support the theoretical results.

Lima and Llibre [2012] have studied a class of planar continuous piecewise linear vector fields with three zones. Using the Poincaré map, they proved that this class admits always a unique limit cycle, which is hyperbolic. The class studied in [Lima & Llibre, 2012] belongs to a larger set of planar continuous piecewise linear vector fields with three zones that can be separated into four other classes. Here, we consider some of these classes and we prove that some of them always admit a unique limit cycle, which is hyperbolic. However we find a class that does not have limit cycles.

This paper reports the finding of a new six-dimensional (6D) autonomous hyperchaotic system, which is obtained by coupling a 1D linear system and a 5D hyperchaotic system that is constructed by adding a linear feedback controller and a nonlinear feedback controller to the Lorenz system. This hyperchaotic system has very simple algebraic structure but can exhibit complex dynamical behaviors. Of particular interest is that it has a hyperchaotic attractor with four positive Lyapunov exponents and a unique equilibrium in a large range of parameters. Numerical analysis of phase trajectories, Lyapunov exponents, bifurcation, power spectrum and Poincaré projections verifies the existence of the hyperchaotic and chaotic attractors. In addition, stability of the hyperbolic equilibrium is analyzed and two complete mathematical characterizations for 6D Hopf bifurcation are given.

Amplitude death (AD) in hidden attractors is attained with a scheme of linear augmentation. This linear control scheme is capable of stabilizing the system to a fixed point state even when the original system does not have any fixed point. Depending on the control parameter, different routes to AD such as boundary crises and Hopf bifurcation are observed. Lyapunov exponent and amplitude index are used to study the dynamical properties of the system.

A model of dynamics of protons in hydrogen-bonded quasi-one-dimensional networks was derived, which is a singular system of the second kind with three parameters and two singular straight lines. In this paper, we use the method of dynamical systems to discuss the bifurcations of phase portraits of the vector fields defined by the singular system. Corresponding to the phase orbits of the system in different parameter conditions, we compute all possible exact parametric representations of solutions. It is shown that in given parameter conditions, there exist solitary wave solutions, kink wave solutions and periodic wave solutions. The mentioned system has no peakon solution.
