There has been considerable research on smart cities and on adapting technology for businesses, governments, citizens and other stakeholders. However, scant attention has been paid to determine how disruptive technologies influence smart cities. Through a systemic literature review, this paper provides a point-by-point consideration of ‘nested’ disruptive technologies, namely, the Internet of Things (IoT), autonomous vehicles (AV), artificial general intelligence (AGI) and 5G networks (5G), and the factors affecting their deployment in the context of smart cities. This paper also discusses why these are important disruptive technologies for smart cities and how these technologies influence them. The main challenges of implementing these disruptive technologies have been identified in the literature and are discussed in this paper. This paper also offers suggestions on the implementation of these disruptive technologies for practitioners of smart cities, so that they can consider them while digitalizing smart cities. In addition to discussing research implications, the paper also throws light on theoretical contributions and recommends ways to leverage these disruptive technologies for smart cities.

The ubiquitous application of smartphones and their advanced development have created an opportunity for using them as coding platforms. In this study, we compared between the use of personal computers (PCs) and smartphones to investigate the factors affecting the use of smartphones in programing. The behavioral intentions of smartphone end-users are inspired by the ease of use perception, enjoyment perception, programing anxiety, perception of external control, and smartphone design aesthetics. Although the $R^2$ value of the smartphone model was lower than that of the PC model, the end-users’ adoption decisions could have shifted toward accepting the use of smartphones for programing had their decisions been free of enforcement. In this study, design aesthetics and programing anxiety were introduced to Technology Acceptance Model 3 in an Arabic environment. Additionally, the model was creatively applied for guiding practitioners in two situations. First, when organizations are in the quest for emerging technology to replace the legacy technology, they might apply the presented side-by-side comparison of the use of PCs with that of smartphones in programing. Second, at a time when decision makers analyze what might hinder the adoption of a recently introduced technology, the model can be a successful hand tool guiding the top management in identifying technology acceptance interventions, an approach this research revealed. Furthermore, in this paper, the research implications and recommendations are presented for technology practitioners and designers.

Open banking has recently been advanced as a measure to foster competition and innovation in the retail banking sector. Since its introduction in the UK, a number of banks have created new digital business models (BMs) that offer individuals and businesses access to more personalized financial services. Yet, it is still unclear what new entrants (smaller and newer banks) have done to potentially disrupt incumbents (larger and well-established banks). To shed light on the innovations in BMs that have been initiated by digital banks to move away from traditional retail banking BM, seven digital BMs operating in the UK financial sector were examined using the BM innovation analysis framework. Our findings suggest that innovation in the new digital BMs has been achieved by building on the existing retail banking activities, developing new digitally enabled activities, and leveraging open innovation activities. Implications of our findings for researchers, managers and policy makers will be outlined.

The purpose of this study is to enrich the stream of research on Technology Forecasting (TF) activities in a firm for practitioners and researchers, a unique context where TF could lead to technological innovation. This paper offers a classification of the approaches and presents technological, industrial, methodological and organizational (TIMO) aspects of TF methods that are inherent in TF activities. Furthermore, this study provides empirical evidences to support organizational and managerial implications regarding TF activities associated with technology planning in a firm. Finally, research findings in regimes of technological changes suggest insights on technological, organizational and managerial processes within the firm.

Entrepreneurial universities are important drivers of technology, innovation, and economic development from which both universities and the society at large will benefit. University leaders may, however, need to manage conflicting demands posed by multiple logics in their everyday work. Drawing on interviews with university leaders at an elite Scandinavian university faculty, this paper explores how leaders balance competing logics in their everyday work so as to achieve the goals of entrepreneurial universities. The analysis of the interviews identifies mechanisms through which leaders enact different institutional logics through their practices, and how these mechanisms lead to the achievement of outcomes related to entrepreneurial activities. These findings contribute to the literature on individual-level challenges and means to align the teaching, research and entrepreneurial missions of entrepreneurial universities.

This study focuses on students who have conceptualized the business idea during their academic studies and created the business venture during or within two years after graduation. The extant literature identifies social networks as a key factor not only for opportunity recognition but also for start-up survival. This study expands the knowledge about the roles of personal networks within the context of student entrepreneurs. By conducting focus group, interviews, and a survey at a top-ranked technological institute of higher learning in India, this study analyzed the role played by the personal networks in facilitating and enabling the creation of a venture by student entrepreneurs. Our study findings indicate that (1) student entrepreneurs expect ten potential roles from their personal networks, (2) the hierarchy of these roles indicates the triggering impact of business networking with a final outcome of motivational support, and (3) business networking, venture financing and the founding team formation are the most important roles in the actual start-up phase.

Translating university technology via the university–industry route faces an array of challenges. Subsequently, understanding the interrelationships of these challenges hopes to provide a better outlook on the complex nature of the university technology transfer (UTT) process. Such an agenda remains a gap in the domain literature. To advance this oversight, this study intends to identify the UTT challenges and determine their complex contextual relationships. The interpretative structural modeling, together with the MICMAC analysis, was sequentially adopted to derive the overarching structure of the challenges of UTT. A case study in a public university in the Philippines was conducted to carry out these objectives. Findings show that time constraints, knowledge being too theoretical, high costs of managing joint research projects, complex organizational structure, institutional bureaucracy, geographic distance, and lack of national benchmark are driving challenges that influence other challenges in impeding UTT in the representative Philippine university. These findings provide policy insights to key decision-makers and stakeholders on the success of technology transfers.
