The traditional financial industry has changed drastically with innovations in digital technology in the sector of finance. The new technology has not only altered the operations of financial services, but also changes the value chain of financial sector. Blockchain is one such technology which has proved to be a game changer in the financial industry. There are various studies on application of blockchain technology in the financial sector. This paper recommends a blockchain-based framework for the insurance industry. The need for this study is that there is an increasing requirement to improve the efficiency and customer experience, reduce the chances of fraud in insurance industry. Blockchain technology can prove to be a solution to the above-mentioned challenges. The methodology used to conduct this study is secondary data analysis and vast literature review. This study finds that there are various studies conducted in identifying the scope and application of blockchain in insurance industry but none of them suggests any framework to be implemented. This study suggests a framework to implement blockchain technology in insurance industry based on industry and academic literature.

This paper approaches a case study of Airbus Spain in the context of the studies on digital transformation in the workplace, with the aim of examining how the company manages the impact of digital transformation in the workplace and its impact on work organization and job quality. Airbus has based its technological change in 3D printing and additive layer manufacturing (ALM), with deep implications in its work processes, training and required skills. The experience of the social actors involved in these processes is analyzed by applying qualitative methods (key informant’s interviews). The results point to an increase in the autonomy and responsibility of the employees due to the implementation of new digital technologies that have brought about a change in organizational culture. Positive effects on job quality are also found through the reduction of work risks, improvement of the physical and social environment, reduction of the intensity of physical work and improvement of employees’ career prospects.

This study explores the relationship between business models, dynamic capabilities, and industry 4.0. Based on the literature of these constructs, a framework was created and four organizations were analyzed. Three of them are classified as providers of industry 4.0, and one is classified as a user of industry 4.0. The results demonstrate that the organizations classified as providers managed to develop dynamic capabilities that assisted them to digitally transform themselves and innovate their business model. For these organizations, network contacts and the organizational ecosystem are considered two fundamental aspects to allow industry 4.0 development. At the same time, organizational culture was pointed out as one of its greatest barriers for innovations and digital transformation development, considered a barrier even greater than the technology itself.

A successful digital transformation (DT) requires reengineering company processes in line with the strategy and business model, and using multiple technologies simultaneously and harmoniously. This creates multiple challenges. This study identifies and prioritizes emerging DT challenges in Turkish industrial sectors. After conducting the literature review, this exploratory study uses structured interviews in multiple sectors and conducts case studies. Challenges are discussed under technological, organizational, managerial, and human dimensions and results are compared with the existing literature. In Turkey, 29% of challenges are human-related, 28% are organizational, 24% are technological, and 19% are managerial. Findings support the importance of handling the soft aspects during the implementations, and put forward the variability of the results with respect to company size and sector. The study is valuable in providing a comprehensive Turkish perspective, classification, and prioritization of multi-dimensional challenges.

Information and communication technology (ICT) adoption is nowadays regarded as an important program due to the fourth industrial revolution across the globe. In this study, we aimed to fill the literature gap by scrutinizing the role of social infrastructure in ICT adoption programs, which is still not much discussed. A perspective of regional innovation systems (RIS) was used because RIS key components resemble the concept of social infrastructure. We measured the implementation of the ICT adoption program in 19 cities in Indonesia by clustering them into two groups (strong and emerging innovators). To determine which social infrastructure indicators are most important in explaining the grouping, especially the strong one as the best practice, we additionally measured the F-test and t-test. The clustering results showed that cities in strong innovator clusters have homogeneously high performance in terms of the number of collaborations, local communities, and products that meet international standards. We suggest that such three indicators be taken into consideration in policymaking at the regional and national levels to improve the performance of the ICT adoption program.

Sustainability is becoming an emerging issue since it attempts to fulfill current needs without sacrificing future generations. The role of the private sector is considered necessary in supporting sustainability, including the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Implementation of a sustainable business model (SBM) has the potential to enable support for sustainability. Many business organizations have claimed to produce an SBM, but many have failed or are insufficient to provide sustainability benefits due to complexity. Therefore, available concepts regarding principles in SBM innovation need to be improved to have greater capacity in dealing with complexity. This paper explores principles for SBM innovation and the relationships between the elements based on empirical evidence through a longitudinal case study in a technology-based organization in Indonesia’s agriculture sector. The results show that seven principles, so-called “ecosystem-centric principles,” are a building block to successful SBM innovation. One principle determined the success of the other principles, and as a whole, work simultaneously and systemically in creating SBM innovation. The business model combines several basic SBMs and develops as an accelerator type of business model and, in a particular phase, combines the model with the crisispreneur. Compared to other SBM principles, the ‘ecosystem-centric principles’ is superior to dealing with a complex environment.

The transformative and complex nature of technological development raises some ethical issues regarding innovation. Actually, many emerging technologies which developed rapidly are actually a double-edged sword. While innovation promotes development, it also affects the nature and society adversely. We discuss the relations among adaptive governance, strategic flexibility and responsible innovation. According to the path of “guide-strategy-behavior”, the influence relationship model of “adaptive governance-strategic flexibility-responsible innovation” is constructed. We took 425 top managers, middle managers and R & D staff as respondents, and finished empirical study by structural equation model (SEM) and fs QCA. We have the following findings: (i) adaptive governance has a positive effect on responsible innovation; (ii) proactive flexibility plays a part in the mediating role between adaptive governance and responsible innovation; (iii) reactive flexibility plays a part in the mediating role between adaptive governance and responsible innovation; (iv) the mediating effect of proactive flexibility is stronger than reactive flexibility. These findings extend the research and practice of adaptive governance and responsible innovation.

Companies are still reticent about adopting IIoT platforms, and research has not yet explained the underlying challenges that impede such adoption. Uncovering these obstacles can open avenues for research and practice to realize the intended potential. We take a holistic perspective on technological, organizational, and environmental challenges that impede organizations’ adoption of IIoT platforms, which we identify in a Delphi study with 22 international experts from academia and practice. Besides identifying 29 challenges, our research reveals the comparative relevance of individual challenges, uncovering differences in perceptions between academics and practitioners. The study contributes to the diffusion of IIoT platforms in research and practice.

In Early 2020, after COVID-19 was declared a pandemic, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) provided guidelines to combat the spread of COVID-19. As a result, Departments of Motor Vehicles (DMVs) introduced several technological changes and modified operation protocols. This study explored the changes of customer feedback resulting from the changes in DMVs operations across the United States. A total of 24164 Google reviews were collected from 69 cities in 43 States. Sentiment analysis, text network, and logistic regression were applied to evaluate the changes of the feedback before and after the lockdown period. It was found that the post-lockdown reviews had higher positive polarity and low negative polarity than pre-lockdown reviews. Furthermore, positive feedback topics, such as excellent service and short waiting time, increased significantly during the post-lockdown era. Keywords that showed a higher likelihood of higher ratings include appointment, wait time, and minutes. Conversely, lower ratings were associated with keywords — customer services, hours, and people, among others. Further, the logistic regression showed that the odds of high ratings increased nearly three times when COVID-19-related keywords were mentioned. Several recommendations to improve operations are presented in this study. It is expected that the findings will benefit DMV operators and policymakers across the United States.
