Recent studies provided opportunities to review some of the principles, which have been used in the formulations of internationally accepted code-recommendations relevant to the seismic design of ductile buildings also subjected to torsional phenomena. With the progress of this study, features emerged which are considered to have contributed to a better understanding of structural behaviour. Moreover, the identification of deeply embedded fallacies, relevant to ductile response, suggested the introduction of some changes in seismic design strategies, yet not widely known or appreciated. Reasons for necessary re-interpretations of traditional structural properties, together with illustrative examples, demonstrating applications, rather than set code-type rules, are offered.

The sensitivity of different parameters used in probabilistic seismic hazard calculation is investigated by different logic tree runs with alternative magnitude sets, source zone models and attenuation relations, and with different sets of values for the seismicity parameters and the σ-value. Also the influence from the different parameters on the hazard uncertainty, represented by fractiles, is investigated. The calculations are made for peak ground acceleration at a site near Aachen in the Lower Rhine Embayment. The model where the site is located in a larger source zone gives lower hazard values. This is typical for the case where the seismicity near the site is high relative to its surrounding. The hazard curves for the different attenuation functions are similar, an effect of the similarity of the functions themselves. However, a large sensitivity of this parameter is indicated for small mean return periods. An increased σ-value implies a moderate increase of the hazard at long mean return periods. The hazard is increasing for decreased focal depth, decreased β-value and increased maximum expected magnitude, respectively. However, the effects are noteworthy only at low hazard levels for variations in the focal depth and to some extent in the maximum expected magnitude. Finally, decreasing the minimum magnitude thought to be of engineering relevance causes a drastic increase of the hazard at small mean return periods.

Pure precast beam-column systems incorporate unbonded reinforced at the critical sections, causing strain incompatibility between steel and concrete. As a result, classical section analysis method, well know for characterising monolithic concrete members, cannot be directly applicable to these systems. This paper provides a section analysis method suitable for precast members, incorporating, through an analogy with equivalent cast-in-place solution named "monolithic beam analogy", an additional condition on the member global displacement. The proposed method was first validated with the experimental data from tests on beam-column Hybrid subassemblages. Using appropriate hysteresis rules and the response envelopes defined by the section analysis method, a prediction of the behaviour of the PRESSS test building was carried out. Satisfactory agreements obtained between the analytical and experimental results confirm the validity of the suggested methodology. Derivation of the method and experimental validation are herein presented.

The main activities and the relevant results of an experimental program aimed at evaluating the dynamic characteristics of a large seismically isolated building are described. The building is situated in Potenza (Italy) and is the largest of five seismically isolated blocks of the University of Basilicata. Cyclic shear tests on scaled isolators and some small amplitude free vibration tests were preliminarily carried out. The latter ones were aimed at getting a preliminary linear characterisation of the structure. Finally, many in situ release tests on the isolated structure were carried out, using a mechanical device purposely designed to statically move the building and then suddenly release it, thus making it vibrate freely. The variations of the dynamic characteristics of the system while the oscillation amplitude decreases have been evaluated by using the "Short Time Fourier Transform (STFT)". The results were elaborated in terms of stiffness and equivalent damping and compared to the results of the laboratory tests on scaled isolators, finding an excellent agreement.

The major hazard posed by earthquakes is often thought to be due to moderate to large magnitude events. However, there have been many cases where earthquakes of moderate and even small magnitude have caused very significant destruction when they have coincided with population centres. Even though the area of intense ground shaking caused by such events is generally small, the epicentral motions can be severe enough to cause damage even in well-engineered structures. Two issues are addressed here, the first being the identification of the minimum earthquake magnitude likely to cause damage to engineered structures and the limits of the near-field for small-to-moderate magnitude earthquakes. The second issue addressed is whether features of near-field ground motions such as directivity, which can significantly enhance the destructive potential, occur in small-to-moderate magnitude events. The accelerograms from the 1986 San Salvador (El Salvador) earthquake indicate that it may be unconservative to assume that near-field directivity effects only need to be considered for earthquakes of moment magnitude M 6.5 and greater.

In this paper, the results of recent studies on inelastic seismic response of MDOF shear-building structures are presented. In the last few decades, the concept of response modification factor R has been introduced and developed to account for inelastic nonlinear behaviour of structures under earthquakes. In this paper, an attempt has been made to adjust and extend this concept through introducing a modifying factor R_T. This factor is used for dynamic analysis of MDOF structures, including the calculation of inelastic response spectra. Sensitivity analysis was carried out to identify the parameters that have influence on R_T. It has been demonstrated that R_T is predominantly a function of number of stories, and accordingly a relationship has been suggested. Finally, an approximate approach has been developed for evaluating the seismic strength and ductility demands of MDOF structures.
