The Hodgkin–Huxley (HH) model is a powerful model to explain different aspects of spike generation in excitable cells. However, the HH model was proposed in 1952 when the real structure of the ion channel was unknown. It is now common knowledge that in many ion-channel proteins the flow of ions through the pore is governed by a gate, comprising a so-called "selectivity filter" inside the ion channel, which can be controlled by electrical interactions. The selectivity filter (SF) is believed to be responsible for the selection and fast conduction of particular ions across the membrane of an excitable cell. Other (generally larger) parts of the molecule such as the pore-domain gate control the access of ions to the channel protein. In fact, two types of gates are considered here for ion channels: the "external gate", which is the voltage sensitive gate, and the "internal gate" which is the selectivity filter gate (SFG). Some quantum effects are expected in the SFG due to its small dimensions, which may play an important role in the operation of an ion channel. Here, we examine parameters in a generalized model of HH to see whether any parameter affects the spike generation. Our results indicate that the previously suggested semi-quantum-classical equation proposed by Bernroider and Summhammer (BS) agrees strongly with the HH equation under different conditions and may even provide a better explanation in some cases. We conclude that the BS model can refine the classical HH model substantially.

Decreased conducting processes leading usually to conduction block and increased weakness of limbs during cold (cold paresis) or warmth (heat paresis) have been reported in patients with chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP). To explore the mechanisms of these symptoms, the effects of temperature (from 20°C to 42°C) on nodal action potentials and their current kinetics in previously simulated case of 70% CIDP are investigated, using our temperature dependent multi-layered model of the myelinated human motor nerve fiber. The results show that potential amplitudes have a bifid form at 20°C. As in the normal case, for the CIDP case, the nodal action potentials are determined mainly by the nodal sodium currents (I_Na) for the temperature range of 20–39°C, as the contribution of nodal fast and slow potassium currents (I_Kf and I_Ks) to the total ionic current (Ii) is negligible. Also, the contribution of I_Kf and I_Ks to the membrane repolarization is enhanced at temperatures higher than 39°C. However, in the temperature range of 20–42°C, all potential parameters in the CIDP case, except for the conduction block during hyperthermia (≥ 40°C) which is again at 45°C, worsen: (i) conduction velocities and potential amplitudes are decreased; (ii) afterpotentials and threshold stimulus currents for the potential generation are increased; (iii) the current kinetics of action potentials is slowed and (iv) the conduction block during hypothermia (≤ 25°C) is at temperatures lower than 20°C. These potential parameters are more altered during hyperthermia and are most altered during hypothermia. The present results suggest that the conducting processes in patients with CIDP are in higher risk during hypothermia than hyperthermia.

Sensitivity to the sign of contrast of direction-selective (DS) and orientation-selective (OS) ganglion cells (GCs) was investigated with selective stimulation of different chromatic types of cones. It was shown that the DS GCs that were classified with the use of achromatic stimuli as belonging to the ON type responded to selective stimulation of the long-wave cones as the ON type also, while the stimulation of middle-wave or short-wave cones elicited the OFF type responses. Character of the responses of DS GCs of the OFF type was exactly the opposite. OS GCs, which responded to achromatic stimuli as the ON–OFF type, responded to selective stimulation of the long-wave cones as the ON–OFF type as well, responded to middle-wave stimulation as the OFF type and to stimulation of short-wave cones it responded mainly as the ON type. At the same time, under color-selective stimulation, both DS and OS GCs retained the directional and orientation selectivity with the same preferred directions. The results obtained are in favor of the idea that the signals from the different chromatic types of cones are combined in the outer synaptic layer of the retina at the inputs of bipolar cells using sign-inverting and/or sign-conserving synapses, while specific spatial properties of motion detectors are formed in the inner synaptic layer.

Inhibitory influences in receptive fields (RFs) of the fish retinal direction-selective ganglion cells (DS GCs) were investigated. Responses of the fast retinal DS GCs were recorded extracellularly from their axon terminals in the superficial layer of tectum opticum of immobilized fish. The data were collected from two cyprinid species — Carassius gibelio, a wild form of the goldfish, and the barbel fish Labeobarbus intermedius. Visual stimuli were presented to the fish on the monitor screen within a square area of stimulation occupying approximately 11 × 11° of the visual field. DS GCs were stimulated by pairs of narrow stripes moving in opposing directions. One of them entered central (responsive) area of cell receptive field (RRF) from the preferred, and the other one from the null side. Stimuli merged at center of stimulation area, and subsequently moved away from each other. It was shown that the cell response evoked by the stripe coming from the preferred side of RF was inhibited by the stimulus coming from the opposite direction. In the majority of units recorded inhibitory effect induced by the null-side stimulus was initiated in the RF periphery. As a rule, inhibitory influences sent from the RF periphery were spread across the entire central area of RF. Modifications of the inhibitory influences were investigated throughout the whole motion of paired stimuli. Evident inhibitory effects mediated from the null direction were recorded during the approach of stimuli. When stripes crossed each other and moved apart inhibition was terminated, and cell response appeared again. Null-side inhibition observed in fish DS GCs is most likely induced by starburst-like amacrine cells described in morphological studies of different fish species. Possible mechanisms underlying direction selectivity in fish DS GCs are discussed.

Visual and auditory systems interact at both cortical and subcortical levels. Studies suggest a highly context-specific cross-modal modulation of the auditory system by the visual system. The present study builds on this work by sampling data from 17 young healthy adults to test whether visual speech stimuli evoke different responses in the auditory efferent system compared to visual non-speech stimuli. The descending cortical influences on medial olivocochlear (MOC) activity were indirectly assessed by examining the effects of contralateral suppression of transient-evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEOAEs) at 1, 2, 3 and 4 kHz under three conditions: (a) in the absence of any contralateral noise (Baseline), (b) contralateral noise + observing facial speech gestures related to productions of vowels /a/ and /u/ and (c) contralateral noise + observing facial non-speech gestures related to smiling and frowning. The results are based on 7 individuals whose data met strict recording criteria and indicated a significant difference in TEOAE suppression between observing speech gestures relative to the non-speech gestures, but only at the 1 kHz frequency. These results suggest that observing a speech gesture compared to a non-speech gesture may trigger a difference in MOC activity, possibly to enhance peripheral neural encoding. If such findings can be reproduced in future research, sensory perception models and theories positing the downstream convergence of unisensory streams of information in the cortex may need to be revised.

This study examines the electrophysiological correlates of beauty evaluation when participants performed the self-reference task. About 13 (7 men, 6 women) undergraduates participated in the experiment using event-related potentials. Results showed that the response to self-relevant information was faster compared to other-relevant information and no significant differences for self-relevant relative to mother-relevant information were observed. Both physical and interior beauty words for self-relevant information showed an enhanced late positive component as compared to other-relevant information. Physical beauty for self-relevant information yielded a larger late positive component in contrast to mother-relevant information but not for interior beauty. This study indicates that beauty is specific to the person who judges it though an individual and one's mother may hold similar views of interior beauty.

The present study examined rats' ability to anticipate undetectable wider gaps between rungs produced when they stepped on and dislodged damaged rungs while they traversed a slightly inclined elevated ladder. Rats in the first of three experiments reduced running speeds when they encountered four evenly spaced damaged rungs either always placed on the first or second half of the ladder (the break-a-way (BW) phase) but quickly recovered to their baseline (BL) levels when damaged rungs where replaced with intact rungs (the recovery phase). Rats previously exposed to damaged rungs over the first half of the ladder increased their speeds above BL on its second "safer" half during the recovery phase, a delayed "relief-like" positive contrast effect. In Experiment 2, other rats decreased their speeds more as they approached a single damaged rung at a fixed location when it occurred before than after the mid-point of the ladder. Although they quickly recovered to BL speeds on the portion of the ladder after the damaged rung or replaced intact rung, they never showed any "relief-like"/escape effects. Rats also reduced their likelihood of dislodging the damaged rung with a fore paw over extended BW training. In the third experiment rats encountered a more easily dislodged damaged rung that was signaled by a closer intact rung on half the trials. Under these conditions rats displayed a more reliable positive contrast "relief-like" effect. We discussed how traditional associative and cognitive theories of aversive conditioning account for these findings and their relationship to normal changes in dopamine production and possible effects of reduced production from the substantia nigra pars compacta (SNpc) in the Basal ganglia in rodent models of Parkinson's disease.

Reading requires the integration of several central cognitive subsystems, ranging from attention and oculomotor control to word identification and language comprehension. Reading saccades and fixations contain information that can be correlated with word properties. When reading a sentence, the brain must decide where to direct the next saccade according to what has been read up to the actual fixation. In this process, the retrieval memory brings information about the current word features and attributes into working memory. According to this information, the prefrontal cortex predicts and triggers the next saccade. The frequency and cloze predictability of the fixated word, the preceding words and the upcoming ones affect when and where the eyes will move next. In this paper we present a diagnostic technique for early stage cognitive impairment detection by analyzing eye movements during reading proverbs. We performed a case-control study involving 20 patients with probable Alzheimer's disease and 40 age-matched, healthy control patients. The measurements were analyzed using linear mixed-effects models, revealing that eye movement behavior while reading can provide valuable information about whether a person is cognitively impaired. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study using word-based properties, proverbs and linear mixed-effect models for identifying cognitive abnormalities.
