Phenylethyl resorcinol-loaded cationic nanoliposomes (PR-CLPs) were prepared and characterized. Moreover, their transdermal properties, cellular uptake, and inhibition of tyrosinase activity and melanin production in B16F10 cells were studied. The mean particle size, polydispersity index (PDI) and zeta potential of the PR-CLPs were $102.1\pm 1.3$nm, $0.22\pm 0.01$mV $\mathrm{\text{and}}+23.7\pm 1.7$mV, respectively. The drug loading efficiency (DLE) and entrapment efficiency (EE) of PR in the PR-CLPs were $8.8\pm 0.1$% and $90.3\pm 1.3$%, respectively. Sustained release of PR from the PR-CLPs was observed in vitro release experiments. The results of the in vitro transdermal experiments showed that PR-CLPs significantly improved both the retention of PR in the skin and its transdermal permeability ($P<0.05$) in comparison with PR solution or traditional phenylethyl resorcinol nanoliposomes (PR-LPs). The uptake and accumulation of FITC-CLPs in B16F10 cells was significantly enhanced as compared with that of FITC-LPs. Furthermore, at a PR concentration of 20 or 30$\mu$g/mL, PR-CLPs displayed a high tyrosinase inhibitory activity and caused a noticeable reduction in the melanin content in B16F10 cells. Taken together, these results indicate that PR-CLPs can efficiently deliver phenylethyl resorcinol to produce an enhanced skin lightening effect.

The aim of this study is to develop and characterize lanolin lipid-based nanoparticles as carriers for avobenzone. Solid Lipid nanoparticles (SLNs) were prepared by the high-pressure homogenization technique. The influence of emulsifiers, avobenzone content in lipid (0–20wt.%), solid lipid blends’ composition and dispersions’ solid content on nanoparticles size, zeta potentials, PI value, stability, matrix structure and UV absorption were investigated. The matrix structure of the lipids and the blends was investigated by using X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques. The particle sizes were $\sim$200nm and PI values are below 0.25 after production. The stability of lipid nanoparticles (LNs) was characterized by naked eye and dynamic light scattering (DLS) technique. The optimized lipid is the lanolin nanostructured lipid carrier with lecithin and APG 810 as co-emulsifiers.

With the improvement of living standard, consumers have higher requirements on functions of cosmetics. Nanocarrier systems can offer remarkable features and have potential in targeted-oriented active molecule delivery. In order to improve the functions of cosmetics, nanocarrier system has been widely used in cosmetics. Nanoemulsions, liposomes and nanostructured lipid carriers (NLCs) have attracted considerable attention as three main nanocarrier systems for cosmetics and personal care products. They have a lot of advantages such as improving stability, improving tissue macrophages distribution, increasing solubility, bioavailability, protection of actives from toxicity, enhancing pharmacological activity and intracellular uptake, targeted delivery and sustained delivery. In this paper, the definition, classification and micro-structure of these three carriers were reviewed. The applications of nanoemulsions, liposomes and NLCs in cosmetics were discussed. The beneficial aspects of nanoemulsions, liposomes and NLCs in cosmetics are very broad. They have very promising future for the delivery of cosmetic active components/ingredients and for the production of high-quality cosmetics.

Nanostructured lipid carrier (NLC) is a new colloidal delivery system which can effectively solve the problems of stability and transdermal delivery of active ingredients with poor water solubility and biocompatibility. Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10), as a lipophilic antioxidant, has poor chemical stability due to unsaturated double bonds in its molecular structure, which limits its addition and application in cosmetics. In this study, CoQ10 NLC was prepared using the mixture of Caprylyl/Capryl Glycoside (APG) and quaternized chitosan (QCS). The particle size of the QCS–APG–NLC was around 250 nm. Compared to NLC stabilized by APG, QCS–APG–NLC has better storage stability under high temperature and light conditions. In vitro transdermal experiment analysis and confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) observation found that QCS modification can effectively increase the penetration amount of CoQ10 in the skin. So, it is suggested that QCS modified APG–NLC can be used as an effective transdermal delivery system for lipophilic active components.
