Water resources are fundamental to China’s industrial economic development, and enhancing their utilization and treatment efficiency is essential for achieving SDG 6. This study integrates precipitation into industrial water use and wastewater treatment (IWUWT) processes as an exogenous variable. A meta two-stage dynamic non-radial directional distance function (DDF) is developed under an exogenous data envelopment analysis (DEA) model. Subsequently, the efficiencies of IWUWT, industrial water use (WU) and wastewater treatment (WT) are evaluated. Additionally, the causes of inefficiency are identified, and differentiated improvement strategies are proposed. Key findings include the following. (1) From 2015 to 2020, the overall efficiency of China’s IWUWT is poor. Incorporating precipitation into the analysis framework significantly enhanced efficiency. The efficiency of WU exceeded that of WT, with precipitation having a more positive impact on the latter. (2) The western and eastern regions outperformed the central region. Provinces like Hebei, Hainan, Ningxia, Qinghai and Chongqing performed well, whereas Shandong, Guangdong and Jiangxi exhibited the weakest results. Notably, economically developed provinces such as Jiangsu, Shandong and Guangdong face considerable conflicts between economic growth and wastewater management. (3) Provinces with weaker industrial bases often face insufficient industrial outputs, while capital redundancy and inadequate WT volumes are common across many provinces. In the policy recommendation, we propose that alongside subsidizing industrial water-saving technologies, the government should implement additional mandatory water resource management policies to enhance policy effectiveness.

A new chemical adsorbent for fluoride, phosphate and chromium removals for use in a high magnetic filtration process was produced by applying a novel nanomagnetite aggregation process through the generating procedure of an iron oxide hydroxide. The experimental work to produce the new adsorbent can be divided into two sequential steps: (1) the formation of nanomagnetite particles by means of a chemical precipitation and (2) embedding the nanomagnetite particles, in a solute state, into an iron oxyhydroxide crystal aggregates, before crystallization, to form the new adsorbent. The experimental results obtained from VSM, zeta potential, adsorption trials and SEM pictures obviously reveal a great alteration in the main properties of the new adsorbent comparing to the base iron component material. The new adsorbent not only has a much higher ions adsorption capacity but also can effectively comes to work with a magnetically assisted water treating system due to its enhanced magnetic susceptibility.

An intelligent soft measurement and information processing method for predicting parameters of process control system was proposed. Process neural network (PNN) is a new configuration of artificial neural network put forward in recent years. Some algorithms of PNN were discussed, and these algorithms were based on function orthogonal basis expansion, yet the convergence rate was comparatively low. An improved algorithm for raising training speed based on function orthogonal basis expansion in PNN for soft measurement was researched. After increasing the normalizing rule on the original algorithm, and introducing function momentum adjustment item and learning rate automatically adjustment method for network weight function, the training time of learning algorithm for PNN was reduced, and a good result was represented by simulation in wastewater treatment system.

The use of new food grade polysaccharides (mucilage) obtained from Hibiscus esculentus and Trigonella foenum graceum, commonly called Okra and Fenugreek, respectively, as flocculants was described. These polysaccharides were used for removal of solids (suspended solids (SS) and total dissolved solids (TDS)) and dyes from real textile effluents and aqueous solutions of different class of synthetic dyes. Influences of varying polysaccharide concentration, contact time and pH on removal of pollutant from the textile wastewater were investigated. Results showed that polysaccharides (mucilage) obtained from Okra and Fenugreek were capable of removing 90%–94% of SS, 30%–44% of TDS and 30%–35% of dye using a very low concentration of polysaccharide. X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns of solid waste material obtained before and after the treatment with polysaccharides were used as a supportive evidence to explain the mechanism of flocculation.

Zinc oxide (ZnO) has demonstrated significant potential as a photocatalyst for the wastewater treatment. However, its wide bandgap leads to inefficient light utilization and rapid carrier recombination, which inhibits its photocatalytic activity. To overcome these limitations, we employed a hydrothermal method to synthesize Ag/ZnO composite microspheres with different concentrations of Ag nanoparticles. By utilizing Ag complexed with ZnO, the Ag/ZnO composite photocatalysts were made to have a narrower bandgap and a broadened light response range, as well as the red-shift phenomenon at the absorption edge. In addition, Ag nanoparticles can act as electron traps to efficiently capture electrons and minimize the recombination of photoexcited carriers for improved photocatalytic performance. Compared with other concentrations of ZnO microspheres and pure ZnO microspheres, the 5% Ag/ZnO composite microspheres exhibited excellent degradation performance when exposed to a xenon lamp, with 90.1% degradation of rhodamine B (RhB) solution in 100min. Incorporating trapping agents in experimental studies has indicated that the RhB degradation process is significantly influenced by •O${}_2^{-}$, while the impact of •OH and h${}^{+}$ were relatively weak. Thus, Ag/ZnO nanocomposites hold great promise as materials for use in wastewater treatment.

A stochastic cellular automaton (CA) model for activated sludge system (ASS) is formulated by a series of transition functions upon realistic treatment processes, and it is tested by comparing with ordinary differential equations (ODEs) of ASS. CA system performed by empirical parameters can reflect the characteristics of fluctuation, complexity and strong non-linearity of ASS. The results show that the predictions of CA are approximately similar to the dynamical behaviors of ODEs. Based on the extreme experimental system with complete cell recycle in model validation, the dynamics of biomass and substrate are predicted accurately by CA, but the large errors exist in ODEs except for integrating more spatially complicated factors. This is due to that the strong mechanical stress from spatial crowding effect is ignored in ODEs, while CA system as a spatially explicit model takes account of local interactions. Despite its extremely simple structure, CA still can capture the essence of ASS better than ODEs, thus it would be very useful in predicting long-term dynamics in other similar systems.

Water scarcity is not a new issue, neither is water pollution. While 70% of the earth’s surface is covered with water, only 3% of it is available as fresh water. Moreover the pollution of water resources has dramatically increased the problem of water scarcity over the last century. Bioremediation presents a cheap and effective solution of this problem. In particular, halophiles have been found to be effective in hypersaline wastewater treatment. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a nonlinear mathematical model to study the removal of a pollutant using halophiles in the hypersaline environment. The analysis of the model is being carried out using stability theory of differential equations. The results indicate that halophiles not only help in removing the organic pollutant, but also help in conversion of saline water into fresh water. The numerical simulations along with sensitivity analysis are performed to support the analytical results.

The adsorption of malachite green from an aqueous solution of magnetic Fe₃O₄ was studied in view of the adsorption isotherm, kinetics and regeneration of the sorbent. The adsorption isotherm of MG on nano-Fe₃O₄ composite followed the Langmuir isotherm. Adsorption kinetics was determined from the experimental data. The nano-Fe₃O₄ can be recycled for reuse after regeneration through acetonitrile. The high adsorption capacity and excellent reusability made Fe₃O₄ attractive for the removal of MG from aqueous solution.

Wastewater reuse constitutes an alternative supply source of water. It not only increases the amount of water available but also reduces water pollution. The benefits and costs of this practice, and the public perception of reuse are the focus of several studies. However, the evidence on industrial wastewater reuse at the firm level remains scant. This paper is aimed at filling this gap by presenting evidence on the determinants of both wastewater treatment and reuse practices in a developing country context. I use firm level data from the Survey on Firms’ Environmental Practices of Ecuador. My results show that wastewater management in general, and reuse in particular, are still limited practices in the industrial sector of the country. My results suggest that firm’s decisions to treat and reuse depends on long-term firm’s characteristics, such as annual investment, the nature of the production process and local conditions, as well as the scale of production and water consumption. Volumes of wastewater treated and reused depend positively on the amount of water used in the production process and the firm’s annual level of investment or expenditure. The cost of the practice only affects the volume treated. The results suggest that targeting water-intensive industry sectors and the costs of wastewater treatment can play an important role for a more sustainable use of water in the industrial sector of Ecuador.

The purpose of this study is to examine the effects on innovation of environmental regulations aimed at reducing eutrophication. We focus on innovations in nitrogen and phosphorus management technology in the wastewater treatment sector and the agricultural sector. Patent data from Sweden over a 50-year period is used as a measure of innovation. We estimate a negative binomial regression model in a reduced form and by the use of control-functions, taking into account environmental regulation as well as more general determinants of innovation. Our results suggest that increased regulation has induced innovation in the wastewater treatment sector, both in the long and short run. The short-run effect was estimated to 40–70% in the years immediately following the introduction of new environmental regulations. A corresponding effect could not be identified in the agricultural sector. The difference between the sectors is likely explained by differences in policy design, where performance standards are applied in the wastewater sector, while design standards and technology-specific subsidies dominate in the agricultural sector.

Present applications of artificial intelligence technology for wastewater treatment in china are summarized. Expert system was mainly used as the system operation decision-making and fault diagnosis. Artificial neuron network was used as system modeling, water quality forecast and soft measure. The application of fuzzy control technology was the main aspect of intelligence control in wastewater treatment process. Finally, the main application problems of artificial intelligence technology for wastewater treatment in china are analysed.

The Microbial Fuel Cell (MFC) technology is researched extensively and believed to be a promising source of energy in near future. Prolific research is being carried out in optimizing the efficiency with reference to design aspects while the substrate-microbial consortium deserves considerable significance. The present study was to identify a potential substrate and to characterize the microbial consortium in the wastewater sample. An economical and optimized two-chambered MFC which employs a salt bridge was used. Samples obtained from various stages of wastewater treatment plant were used as substrate. The results on comparison accounts for a maximum voltage of 1.25V and a power density of 0.02165 W/m² were generated from Activated Sludge sample. This substrate-microbial consortium proves to be of great potential in comparison with other samples analyzed.

The coupling of biodiesel production and advanced wastewater treatment with immobilized microalgae has attracted much concern in recent years. Its economic feasibility, however, remains unclear. Therefore, we performed life cycle energy analysis and biodiesel production potential evaluation for the coupling system in China. The results demonstrated that when alginate recycle rate increased to 95%, the NER value of the coupling system could drop down to less than 1, indicating economic feasibility of large application. Temperature and development level are two crucial factors for biodiesel production potential. The coupling technology therefore shows a great potential of application in China, especially in regions with suitable temperature and high development level.

More and more scholars were committed to loading the iron oxide nanoparticles on the graphene. Shown in the studies, there were many nucleation sites on the graphene for the Fe₃O₄ particles, meanwhile, the distance between the graphene was lengthened due to the magnetic Fe₃O₄ particles, and the reunion of the graphene could be avoided. The excellent performance of the two materials was combined perfectly in this way. To facilitate the researchers work better in the future, in this paper, the synthesis of Fe₃O₄/graphene were reviewed from its applications such as waste water treatment, magnetic targeting drugs, biosensor, and the anode materials for lithium-ion battery. Simultaneously, the prospects of the composite material were discussed.

Growth in biofilms is a general ability of microbial populations which are historically used in wastewater treatment. The basic aim of biofilm formation is the fixation of microorganisms at a given place as a means of stabilizing living conditions. In a biofilm environment, organisms are protected against negative environmental influences. Compared to dispersion growth, biofilms offer many advantages that allow their use in specific biological treatment of industrial wastewater. The crucial advantage is the increase in the residence time of biomass in biofilm reactors allowing concentrations of slow-growing microorganisms and the diffusion barrier of the biofilm which reduces the effects of toxicants and suboptimal physico-chemical conditions. The development of the biofilm depends on many factors, from the surface properties to the supply of nutrients and hydrodynamic forces in the bioreactor. The objective of many research projects in the field of wastewater treatment is to technologically improve the biomass carrier. The final requirements are excellent colonization, high cleaning efficiency given the maximum specific surface area, optimal density and ease of production. Based on these crucial parameters the Technical University of Liberec has begun the development of a new type of carrier which is based on the use of polymeric nanofiber materials. This has resulted in a yarn which consists of a carrier fiber with a layer of nanofibers (the diameter of the nanofibers is in the order of hundreds of nanometers). The clear advantages of nanotechnology are a high protected specific surface area which promotes the microbial population during initial adhesion to the surface of the carrier and also during future development, protection of the population from surrounding adverse effects, promoting the supply of nutrients and supporting the compactness of the biofilm. The aim of the article is to highlight the possibilities and potential of biofilms with the presence of a composite nanofiber carrier.

During water quality test for activated carbon filter, found activated carbon filter was in poor condition. By analyzing the failure causes of the filter blocks, presented an improvement scheme pertinently, and optimized the internal structure of the filter. Finally, it is verified that the structure is rational; every water quality index reaches the requirements.
